Australia Is Modernising the Way Digital Evidence Is Managed

Digital evidence is becoming a larger part of Australia’s criminal justice system.
Phones, computers, surveillance footage, online communications and other electronic records can generate enormous amounts of information during an investigation.
Managing that information efficiently is becoming just as important as collecting it.
The Australian Government’s 2026 Major Digital Projects Report provides a useful example of this change.
The Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions established an Evidence Management Modernisation Program as the volume and complexity of digital evidence being referred for prosecution continued to grow.

Why Evidence Management Needs to Change
Traditional evidence systems were not necessarily designed for the quantity of digital information now generated during investigations.
A single matter may contain large video files, device extractions, documents, photographs, communications and information from several different agencies.
Without a structured system, finding and sharing relevant information can become difficult and time consuming.

Modern evidence management systems are being designed to improve:

– Secure evidence storage

– Evidence organisation

– Search and retrieval

– Controlled access

– Information sharing

– Audit trails

– Case preparation

– Chain-of-custody records

Security and Accessibility Need to Work Together
Evidence needs to be protected, but authorised investigators, forensic specialists and prosecutors also need to access the information required for their work.
That means modern evidence systems need to balance security with practical accessibility. The Commonwealth program introduced a scalable and integrated platform specifically designed to manage large quantities of digital evidence within prosecution workflows.

According to the Australian Government report, the new system has improved efficiency, accuracy and accessibility when managing evidence.
